How To Enjoy Coming To Work

Do you dread waking up in the morning to go to work? You’re not alone. According to a 2015 Gallup study, two thirds of employees don’t like their jobs and are disengaged.

Considering that the average human works nearly two thirds of their lives, everyone deserves to love their job and enjoy going to work. That being said, here are 7 ways to actually enjoy going to work:

1. Eat a good breakfast
They often say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it’s true! Most people get unpleasant when they are hungry and that’s no way to start your day. If you are in a hurry, eating a simple apple or a banana will leave you feeling more energetic with the necessary boost to help see you through to lunchtime.

2. Talk to your co-workers
Talking to your co-workers may reveal that you have something in common with them. From a simple “Hello, how was your weekend?” in passing to eating lunch with your co-workers, having friends in the office will make you enjoy your workday. Talking about your children, the sports game last night, music or any other thing that interests you are appropriate ways to start a conversation. Just try avoiding sensitive topics such a politics however, as a disagreement can leave a bad sentiment.

3. Take 30 minutes to work on your own projects
Google and many other companies are starting to pick up on this great tactic. Working on a personal project can help break up the day and allow you to express your creativity and personal interests. This could be a book you are writing, a business you are starting, or a project to go a step above and impress your boss with that great idea you had!

4. Clean your office/desk
A cluttered desk is a cluttered brain. Cleaning your desk can be therapeutic and coming to work in the morning to a clean desk, free of papers and miscellaneous objects, can help get your mind in the right place so that you can focus on the day. Feel free to decorate your area with pictures of loved ones or a gift your kids made you for your birthday; but do you really need those post-it note doodles or that memo from last month sitting on your desk?

5. Challenge yourself
Challenging yourself can make your job more engaging. No one likes when their job seems too hard, but having a challenge can present you with something to work towards. You will feel even better about yourself after you completed the task as well.

6. Create a checklist
Having an unorganised schedule of many tasks can create stress and anxiety in your workday. Take the time to create a to-do-list with an order in which you are going to tackle each responsibility. This will reduce any unwanted stress and increase the efficiency in which you do things!
7. Get a good night’s rest
Lastly, and arguably the most important, is to get enough rest! A good night’s sleep can make all the difference in how your day ahead will go.  We’ve all been there - where you can hardly keep your eyelids open at your morning meeting, or you can’t focus on your work because all you can think about is crawling back into bed. Being awake and fully rested allows you to have a more positive attitude and can jumpstart your day on the right note.
