How to be Found Online?

Going online these days is not difficult, however, getting found online and gaining profit from the Internet is definitely not as easy as it may to sound. That being said, the online world is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to market your services, sell your products and turn your small business into a major brand. Without a bit of research or guidance, being found online is a difficult process that involves technical understanding of how search engines work and what strategy you need to create to achieve your goals.

How Do Search Engines Work?

Techy jargon and geeky details about search engines aside, search engines find information by crawling through certain metrics created by search engine services. These metrics range from the type of content on your website to strategic placements of keywords and links from other websites. To be found online, you will therefore, need to have a website that matches many of these metrics and this process is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
SEO is the art of creating your online presence and ensuring that may of the all-important metrics released by the search engine service provider is met. For instance, one requirement of SEO is to have the right keywords defining your website’s services. When someone searches for, ‘best coffee place in (town)/(city),’ they should be taken to the top 10 results that answers their search. If your website’s SEO is done well, you could be on the top 10 results - which means, a customer is walking your way.
Let’s dig a little deeper to understand how SEO works and what you need to implement to be found online.

Understand the Basics of SEO

There are two types of SEO – on-page and off-page. On-page SEO applies to all the technical metrics that you have to follow by implementing them on your website. This could mean having the right seo meta tags, the right keywords and tons of other things (in fact there’s over 200 ‘signals’ as Google calls them). There are plenty of SEO checklists available along with tons of plugins for popular website content management systems that can be of great help if you want to implement SEO changes on your website. A few of the things you should know when creating content are the number of words in your title, the use of the main keyword in your title, SEO tags and the overall performance of your website.
Once done, you move on to your off-page SEO which is essentially using strategies and tactics to increase your visibility on search engines. The reason being that although search engines will be able to find you, they will not be able to list you amongst the top 10 or 20 results unless there has been significant effort in content marketing and optimization to push your website up to the top of the page. If you’re not listed on the first page, you’ll find very few people will come to your website.

Creating an SEO Strategy

Essentially, an SEO strategy should be made by SEO experts who should be able to understand your domain or niche and create a strategy that could help you achieve your goals. SEO experts analyse your industry, the keywords relevant to your industry, the strategic use of those keywords on your website and provide you with solutions that could help you stand out from the crowd. With the help of an SEO expert, you may be able to be visible in the top 10 search results which is nothing short of winning a lottery for your business!
It’s important to keep in mind that search engine optimization techniques especially that of Google, change quite frequently, and you have to keep yourself updated if you want to be found online. Stay updated with latest algorithm changes or updates and ensure that your online presence has all the right requirements to help you get found. And don’t try to beat the system as it could lead to a penalty which may ultimately hurt your online presence.
