Co-working Misconceptions

Co-working has been lauded as the new paradigm for the business world, yet most people can’t even define the word. You think it has something to do with shared work space, maybe a collaborative community…but the rest is sort of hazy. Have no fear: Compass Offices is here to help make sense of the new normal with a few common misconceptions about co-working spaces.

Anything you can do at a co-working space, you can do at Starbucks: Not unless Starbucks serves onsite community management with its orange mocha frappuccinos. Sure, your favourite coffee shop may have wi-fi now, but it doesn’t have access to an entire network of creators and collaborators, private conference rooms, and even basics like the trusty printer, fax, and scanner capabilities. Plus, our coffee is free!

It’s too noisy and too distracting: Co-working is designed to accommodate all sorts of work styles. At Compass Offices, our spaces are outfitted with a mix of work and social space. We also have designated quiet areas if you really need to bunker down and get stuff done…But, don’t worry: we have space for chatterboxes too!

Co-working only offers temporary space for start-ups: Co-working isn’t just a turnstile for start-up companies. We host businesses of varying sizes and disciplines alongside satellite workers and start-ups. We’re here for you no matter what stage your business is in. And honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way.

There’s no room to grow within a co-working space: Many people assume co-working spaces can get cramped as your business grows. But co-working spaces are adaptable by nature, and can accommodate businesses of any size with dedicated seating options, that can be matched to suit your company’s needs.

Co-working is too expensive: Sometimes it’s hard to convince people to pay for co-working space when they can just work at home for free. But let’s be honest: cats and kids don’t make the best co-workers. When you pay for a co-working membership, you pay for the community. You’ve suddenly RSVP’d to all sorts of networking events and scored an endless stream of membership perks and benefits.

Co-working is just a fad: For some people, the word ‘co-working’ conjures up the image of alternative office spaces - rock climbing walls instead of whiteboards, beer on tap, and hammocks inexplicably everywhere. That’s cool. But that’s definitely not the average co-working space. Co-working isn’t designed to be flashy; it’s designed to rethink how we conduct business and transform traditional work environments into the future of work. We’re a whole lot more than just the flavour of the week.

Co-working sounds nice, but it isn’t for me: Are you sure? Because co-working can be for anyone! It doesn’t have any prerequisites or an ideal demographic; it’s all about business without borders. While some spaces will concentrate on certain specialties or trades, Compass Offices is industry agnostic.

We strive to keep our spaces as diverse as possible - in industry, gender, race, and age - to create workspaces that work for everyone.
